My Story
I came to personally know Jesus at age 21 and during the next 20 years I was a stay at home mom. I kept busy with kid activities, serving the youth at church, studying scripture, and growing in my walk with the Lord. In 2011, I started my second career and became a respiratory therapist working in a hospital caring for sick patients. This new career has expanded my capacity to live out my faith by being the hands and feet of Jesus my savior to the sick, scared, and dying.
Teach me to Lead
Five years ago I stepped into a leadership position at work and I struggled with how to live out my faith in my leadership. As I studied the Bible and prayed to learn God’s way to lead I heard a sermon that discussed these verses.
When he (the king) takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this Law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this Law and the decrees and not consider himself better than his brothers and turn from the Law to the right or the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.
Deuteronomy 17:18-20 (NIV)
What I heard in these verses really challenged me. I want to be a godly leader and my life to reflect God and glorify him
A Personal Challenge
As I pondered this challenge to the ancient kings of Israel a seed of an idea began to develop. “Could copying the law for themself still be a relevant thing for leaders to do?” Although this idea seemed crazy and impossible I decided to do it. God’s word teaches in ways I cannot imagine. The scripture is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. (2 Tim 3:16). As a result I decided to trust the Lord to teach me and grabbed my pen and spiral notebook.
My Journey thru Scripture Begins
On March 22, 2018 I began the task of copying the word of God for myself. I started “In the beginning” with Genesis 1:1 and am currently copying Numbers. When I started I had no idea what to expect, but my hope was to know God better and learn how to be a better leader. In the beginning, my copying would be in spurts and I would have weeks or months between entries. As I persevered in this project it has become the mainstay in my personal time with the Lord.
What this journey looks like varies. There are days that I only copy a paragraph because of time while other days I copy a whole chapter. Sometimes days will pass between entries as I pursue rabbit trails through other parts of the scripture. There are also days I only copy a sentence or two as the Lord brings conviction and I spend time in repentance and prayer. One thing I know, the words I am copying from the Bible are alive and are doing a great work in me.
Unexpected Blessings
This journey has been so incredibly personal to me and my life has been enriched in so many unexpected ways. The first blessing is that this quest has caused me to develop a clearer picture of who God is. I can see his story unfolding through the pages of scripture. I see how he called this insignificant, unfaithful family, and created a nation to be set apart for himself. How imperfect they were! Yet God created this picture as pattern of his plan. In the fullness of time he brought forth the only one who was able to be completely set apart. Jesus! He alone is worthy! He is holy! Holy! Holy!
In additon, to seeing God more clearly, I see more clearly who I am. As I dive deeper into the text I see myself reflected in the unfaithfulness of the Israelites. My motives and my actions all reflect the sinfulness that separates me from God. But yet I see on every page how wonderful God is. I am amazed that he loves me enough to call me to be his child in spite of my unfaithfulness.
Finally, I have seen that because I am his child, God calls me to be set apart. He calls me to not look back at my old life or be like the world around me. In the pages of scripture he has shown me examples, both good and bad, of what that looks like. He also reminds me that I have something the Israelites never had, the indwelling Holy Spirit. His Spirit that teaches and guides me every moment of every day.
